I try to be grateful for what folk do for me. I try to be very clear as to who to thank, though, erring on the side of thanking service workers who help me with my groceries, etc. and who are not nearly compensated enough for their work.
So, Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving to whom? Without a direct object it feels like one of those cultural holidays, like Christmas when we stop talking about Christ's commands to us and party while fetishizing him as an infant.
I do like an Autumnal family celebration and I have much to thank my family for. Generalizing that to a Thanksgiving that is vague and fuzzy (lacking any overall thanks to our creator for ongoing blessings) seems to miss the point quite a bit.
I'll wait until after it passes before starting my Bah Humbug for December 25, which is Isaac Newton's birthday (but according to the gospels Christ was born in spring . . .)
